The Impact of Native Plant Gardens

Initial findings from studies of 24 National Wildlife Federation certified habitats across the country suggest that wildlife gardening, if adopted on a wider scale, can help boost biodiversity: the variety of life that gives ecosystems their resiliency. This research was conducted as part of an ambitious four-year study American Residential Macrosystem: Yard Futures, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). “

Planting native plants increases biodiversity.

Native plants are those that originated and evolved over time with other plants, insects, and animals in the same geographic area. As a result, the life cycles of insects are intimately tied to native plants. Increasing native plants in the environment increases insect populations that depend upon them and the overall biodiversity in an area. Native plants are acclimated to the weather, seasons, and rhythms of the habitats in their native range. This strong connection to place leads to plants that thrive once they are established. Their disease and pest resistance eliminates the need for pesticides further restoring ecosystems.

The native plants I offer are selected for our region. I research and source straight species in an effort to ensure maximum benefit to the insects that coevolved with them. I recommend planting a variety of native plants to create a small ecosystem supporting many plants, insects, and birds in your yard.  Contact me for a initial consultation on a native plant garden designed for your home.  Initial consultations are complementary!

All pesticides endanger habitats.  Mosquito and flea/tick sprays kill all insects including butterflies and bees at the point of application for adult insects. As systemic pesticides accumulate in plants, they kill larval forms of insects. Pollinators visiting these plants are “dosed” with pesticides at each visit. Birds foraging for food for their nestlings may feed sick larva/pollinators to their nestlings who also die when enough pesticide builds-up in their systems. I do not recommend spraying native plant habitats with any pesticides. Ask me about alternatives!

Native Plants Packs for 2024

Planting native plants to support wildlife is a balancing act between number of plants (abundance) and number of species (richness).  It is important to have both. Biodiversity is the combination of abundance and richness.  Considering the location of the garden (Sun, soil, etc.,)  I suggest selecting at least 3 species and planting 2-3 plants of each species.  Explore the plant assemblage suggestions for specific garden situations below.  Contact me with questions about your garden!
